To continue our Reading for Pleasure journey that the school has embarked upon this year, Mrs C Lawson has set the children a challenge over the summer holidays to find their favourite thing to read and the most obscure place they can to read it in. If your child would like to take part in this challenge, then please take a photo and send it to the school office for September so that we can make a 'Reading for Pleasure' display.

We are thrilled to share some exciting news about our commitment to supporting the emotional well-being of all our children.  We have been working to develop the Thrive Approach, a well-researched and effective way to support children to flourish socially and emotionally, ensuring they feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.

As part of this commitment, we now have two fully qualified, licenced Thrive practitioners – Mrs White and Mrs Clarkson. They have completed their training and are already implementing Thrive strategies across the school alongside recent whole staff training. Working within the Thrive Approach is key to helping children develop the emotional resilience and confidence they need to succeed. 

To create the best possible environment for our children, we are also investing in more breakout spaces within the school. These carefully designed areas will provide a sense of comfort and security, allowing children to self-regulate and feel supported in times of need. We are especially excited to announce the development of a brand-new Thrive Room, a dedicated space where children can engage in activities designed to nurture their emotional well-being.

This is just the beginning of our journey. Over the coming months, we will continue to embed the Thrive Approach throughout the school and work towards achieving the ‘Excellence in Thrive’ Award. This prestigious recognition will highlight our dedication to providing an environment where every child can feel valued, understood, and supported.

A huge thank you to Mayor Councillor Di Storr, 676^th Mayor of Hedon, Town Clark Mrs Kim Gray and Mace Bearer & Toastmaster Mr John Dawson who made the visit very informative and engaging for us all.

Within this collection there are quite a few Head Teachers logbooks. The earliest dates back to 11 May 1900. The Head Teacher reports when children from Hull were evacuated to Keyingham during the war, how there were outbreaks of influenza and how the caretaker kept sleeping in and not lighting the boiler to warm the school, resulting in pupils all wearing their ‘overcoats’. Plus many more fantastic entries.

One of the other books included in the collection is the ‘Punishment Book’. This is a log of incidents the Head Teacher had made when the children in school encountered various forms of punishment.

There are lots of photos, which are a delight to look through.

The meeting room now displays the fantastic collection, which you can see from the photos and video. Snapshots of historic events are pictured in the frames, starting with the earliest dates through to the present day. There a few present day items on display as well, including items that have been made from Graduate Awards.

We would like to invite you in next half term to view this room and take a look at the amazing collection. This will take place on the 17 April 2024 from 2.30pm onwards. The end of the school day will be as normal.

We are excited to be able to share with you that we have been recognised as one of the top 20 schools in the country in our use of an excellent reading resource known as "The Day", an honour that highlights our commitment to fostering critical thinking and curiosity among our pupils.

We have always held a belief close to our heart that the "right question matters more than the right answer." It's a philosophy that shapes our school values of kindness, courage and curiosity, our approach to education and empowers our pupils to become lifelong learners. Instead of simply memorising facts, our #KeyinghamKids are encouraged to explore, inquire, and think critically about the world around them.

We are incredibly proud to be recognised as one of the top schools in the country! It's a reflection of our commitment to providing a nurturing environment where students can thrive academically and personally. Being appointed as an ambassador for The Day further validates our belief that fostering curiosity and asking the right questions is key to unlocking a world of possibilities for our pupils.

We use "The Day" throughout the week with our children to help them read and understand more about the events happening around the world at an age-appropriate level and through safe and active discussion. If you would like to find out more about this excellent classroom resource, click here.

OPAL mentors have been working closely with our staff to develop our play curriculum, ensuring that all playtimes are positive, enjoyable and rewarding for the children. OPAL’s vision is that every child in every school has an amazing hour of high-quality play every day – with no exceptions! The children have played an integral part to the OPAL development and have embraced the change in playtimes.

Mr Copley and Mrs Mountain have driven this project forward within school and our final assessment was last week.

We are pleased to announce the following:

Keyingham Primary has just achieved GOLD Award status from OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning). This means that they are in the top 4% of UK schools for the quality of play they provide for all their children. The school has demonstrated that it takes the UNCRC Article 31, on the child's right to play, seriously and is implementing all stages of school improvement in relation to play, including policy, planning, resourcing, staffing and evaluation."

This is a huge achievement for Keyingham Primary School, and we are proud of our GOLD award!! In the coming weeks we will have a presentation assembly, ran by our OPAL mentor, where we will be officially presented with the Gold Quality mark.

This is still a working project at Keyingham Primary School, there is always more to improve on and enhance our playtimes further. We ask that if you have any donations, to hand them in at Reception. Mrs Mountain is also keen to do set monthly donations, ie, small world animals one month and dolls the next. More information to follow on this idea.

After half term we will still be using the field at the back of the school for all the amazing play, however, it is known that it can get quite wet and boggy on there. Please remember to send your child in with some wellies so they can continue accessing all areas of the school grounds.

I just wanted to let you know of a couple of events and notices that might be of interest to you all over the coming weeks:

I hope that the children have been talking to you about some of the changes in school this week.  Their class blogs today will give you more details to discuss over the weekend.

Here are a few of the highlights from our perspective:

The day started off earlier then normal for the children and staff. Everyone had packed lunches in hand, sat on the bus and were on their way by 8:30am.

We made our two-hour journey up to Dalby on two double decker buses and one of our Trust minibuses. We had to make a ‘wild toilet’ stop but all was well.

We eventually arrived at Adderstone, the north part of Dalby Forest. We quickly got ourselves ready to start our activities and everyone went off with their team leaders.

The Year 1’s completed the Zog Trail, with their very own wings and stickers. They thoroughly enjoyed their adventure and were ready for their dinner when they returned to base.

Year 2 completed the Gruffalo Trail. They were super-fast walking around this course, completing all the questions. They even had time to play on the park afterwards.

The Year 3’s and 4’s completed the Health and Wellbeing ranges activities. This involved creating patterns with what they could find in the forest and tried Yoga.

Years 5 and 6 made shelters. They used large branches to create safe spaces that they could sit under. Mrs Burman even brought along Keyingham’s Forest School shelter building kit.

Once the activities were completed, we had a whole school picnic on Adderstone field. Everyone loved sitting on the grass to eat their delicious packed lunches their parents had made for them. Once the children had finished eating, they all played a few games on the field. A member of staff took a drone with them which captured some fabulous photos (to follow shortly).

Once we had all made a toilet visit, we headed back to the buses to make our journey back to school.

After a long drive back… a road closure, a ‘wild toilet’ stop and a bus swap… we made it back to Keyingham Primary School! Safe and Sound!!

The children and staff had a brilliant day and continued to talk about their adventures for the remainder of the week.

A BIG thank you to Mrs White for organising such a fabulous whole school trip. Same again next year?!?!

The children learnt about the world of farming, where their food comes from and how many different professions/careers there are involved in this industry. The day started with a sheep dog demonstration. The children loved this and got to choose which dog they thought did the best job in controlling the sheep around the enclosure. After a separate show involving gun dogs, the children found it really interesting to learn about sustainability in farming and what some of the local farms produce - they learnt what arable farming was. The children then went to find out all about pigs and were able to see different breeds - they did not do much apart from sleep, but the children learnt lots of information. After a well-needed lunch and ice cream break, they then went on to learn about how sheep are sheared and lots of other facts to do with wool. They finished the day with a session led by the Humber Forest group (the charity group that helped plant trees at school) and did some tree identification based on their leaves.

Some comments from the children who attended:

• It was really fun day, the ice cream was amazing. We even learnt how sheep were sheered and how they span the wool!
• This day was spectacular. I learnt a lot of new things. We got to volunteer in some of the stalls, which I really enjoyed.
• We learned about how Barley is turned into beer (it was disgusting) and we saw an amazing sheepdog demonstration.

The day was very informative for the children, and staff. We hope we have the same opportunity to visit again next academic year. Thank you, Driffield Agricultural Society.

General Tournament Information

Children across year groups 2-6 of the school were representing Holderness Vikings at the tournament. A national tournament spread over 2 weekends with 275 teams from all over the UK attending the Rugby League Tour. Staged at Butlins in Skegness where the Holderness Vikings teams competed over 2 days.

Volunteer run local Rugby League team based in Keyingham with age groups across all ages from under 5’s through to under 14’s.

Primary HV Team’s at the tournament

Primary Rugby League tournament against teams from as far away as Warrington, Oldham and Saddleworth. Although no scores are recorded in Primary Rugby League, to minimise the pressure on the children and to keep things fun, the U8 team performed fantastically against some very difficult opposition (Won 4, Drew 1 and Lost 1 – unofficially winning the group).

The U7 group (year 2) which included quite a few of our students, were undefeated all weekend. (unofficially winning their groups also). All children in year 2 played outstandingly with one child getting a ‘player of the tournament award’.

Fair Play Award

1 team from each age group is selected by the event organisers to win the ‘Fair Play Award’. This award is scored on a points system throughout the weekend with points awarded by the event officials to teams for topics such as Skill, Determination, Behaviour, Attitude, Respect and the way in which they generally conduct themselves and treat others. The Under 8 team were selected to receive this award and were presented it on stage by members of the Leeds Rhinos Team (and Ronnie the Rhino) in front of 100’s of other players and parents.

All children in Key Stage 2 have enjoyed practicing dance in the hall. Year 4 are continuing their swimming lessons. Year 3 have been doing sports with a teacher from Withernsea High School. For Year 6 it has been their last week of revision before SATS. We wish them all luck for next week. Year 1 visited the Antarctic through Now Press Play and Year 2 virtually visited the Galapagos Islands. Year 5 have been looking at artifacts from ancient Greece.

All children have drawn a picture of themselves wearing a crown this week in preparation for a Kings Coronation Tea Towel. More information will follow.
